Manchester United came out on top in their Battle of Britain clash with Celtic, while Arsenal also maintained their charge towards the knockout stages in a free-scoring night of UEFA Champions League action.
Berbatov, 2 goals hero
United were grateful to a brace from Dimitar Berbatov and a second-half strike from in-form Wayne Rooney as they comfortably downed SPL side Celtic 3-0 to move to within touching distance of the last 16, while Gordon Strachan's men now face an uphill challenge if they are to reach the latter rounds.
Meanwhile, Arsenal issued a statement of their intent on the European stage as they were at their swashbuckling best to end Fenerbahce's 15-game unbeaten home record.
Emmanuel Adebayor, Theo Walcott, Abou Diaby, Alexandre Song and Aaron Ramsey were the Gunners' heroes as they scored the goals to cement a place at the top of Group G with a stunning 5-2 victory in Turkey.
Elsewhere, the pressure eased on under-fire Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri as his side defeated nine-time champions Real Madrid, and much-criticised Bayern Munich boss Jurgen Klinsmann earned some breathing space with a comfortable victory over Fiorentina on a night which saw a total of 36 goals.
But it was United's clash with Celtic - who remain without an away win in Europe's premier club competition - which earns the headlines as Sir Alex Ferguson's side ran out deserved winners to remain at the pinnacle of Group E.
Defending champions United enjoyed the better of a lively first half at Old Trafford, with Celtic sloppy in possession, and found themselves in front after 30 minutes in controversial style. Berbatov proved he has now well and truly settled into his new surroundings following his summer transfer deadline day move from Tottenham as he opened the scoring.
The Bulgarian striker survived Celtic's appeals of offside to apply the slightest of touches and prod past Artur Boruc after John O'Shea had flicked on at a corner. And it was Berbatov - again from a possible offside position - who grabbed United's second as he followed up a rifled Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick, which Boruc could only palm, to tap in on 51 minutes.
Rooney - who it appears cannot help but score at present - then added gloss to United's victory as he demonstrated all of his recent guile to take a touch on the edge of the box, turn, and curl past Boruc with 14 minutes left on the clock.
Arsenal also impressed and heaped misery on Luis Aragones as the Gunners stunned the former Spain chief's Fenerbahce with two goals in the space of 60 seconds with an apparent disregard for their host's intimidating record at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.
At their aesthetic best, Arsenal took the lead on 10 minutes as Adebayor ran on to an inch-perfect Cesc Fabregas pass - with Walcott demonstrating nifty footwork to avoid an offside decision - to slot past Volkan Demirel.
One minute later, Walcott was again at the heart of the action as the England star rounded home goalkeeper Volkan to double his side's advantage. The two-goal cushion, however, was short-lived for the Premier League outfit as on 19 minutes Mikael Silvestre was unfortunate to put past his own shot-stopper Manuel Almunia after getting in the way of a fizzed Daniel Guiza cross.
But Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger's concerns did not last long as Abou Diaby, took advantage of some adrift home defending on 22 minutes to calmly add the Gunners' third. And four minutes after the half-time break, aided and abetted by more comedy capers in the heart of the Fenerbahce defence, Song fired in Arsenal's fourth with style.
Spain international Guiza hit a consolation for Fenerbahce with 12 minutes remaining, but it was far too little far too late as Arsenal comfortably secured the three points with a late Ramsey strike.
French champions Lyon came out on top of an eight-goal thriller with Steaua Bucharest to record their first victory in this season's tournament.
Lyon, however, were rattled early on as Steaua netted twice in the opening 11 minutes in Bucharest.
First, Arthuro converted a sublime cross from George Ogararu on eight minutes, and 11 minutes later Dorin Goian added a second as he met a Banel Nicolita corner with a combination of head, neck and back.
Lyon, though, were deservedly back on level terms as Kader Keita converted in stunning style on 23 minutes and highly-rated Karim Benzema equalised shortly after the half-hour mark. But Steaua were again in front on the stroke of half time as Ovidiu Petre climbed the highest to head in at a corner.
The seesaw encounter continued in style and it was Lyon who enjoyed the better as Fred pounced on 69 minutes and Benzema grabbed his personal second two minutes later.
Fred made sure of the points with a fifth goal in injury time to move Lyon second in Group F.
Juventus have made their worst start to a season in 28 years, leaving manager Ranieri clinging to his job at Stadio delle Alpi, but a vital 2-1 home victory over Real Madrid will silence some doubters.
It was Juve who took an early lead in sensational style as Italian veteran Alessandro Del Piero curled in from 25 yards with Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas an awestruck spectator.
Juventus, who have won the European Cup on two occasions, then doubled their advantage four minutes after half time as Amauri headed in at the back post with the aid of a deflection off Real defender Gabriel Heinze.
Primera Liga champions Real pulled a goal back on 66 minutes as Ruud van Nistelrooy nodded his 61st goal in the Champions League, but Juve clung on for the points to move to the summit of Group H.
Bayern boss Klinsmann has also come in for criticism following a shaky domestic start, but his side continued their impressive European form with a 3-0 win over Fiorentina in Group F.
Germany international Miroslav Klose gave the home side the lead after only four minutes as he latched on to Luca Toni's header to finish with aplomb. And then on 25 minutes Bastian Schweinsteiger demonstrated equal composure to deftly add a second after sending Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey the wrong way.
And in the dying minutes Bayern's Ze Roberto ensured Klinsmann will sleep soundly as he added a spectacular third.Villarreal remain hot on the heels of United in Group E as they defeated Aalborg 6-3 at El Madrigal thanks to a Joseba Llorente treble.
Marek Saganowski gave Danish side Aalborg a surprise lead after 19 minutes, but Villarreal - suggested by some as potential dark horses in this season's competition - soon slipped into gear.
Former United forward Giuseppe Rossi (28) equalised and five minutes later Spanish full-back Joan Capdevila unleashed an unstoppable, half-volleyed, drive to hand Manuel Pellegrini's side the lead.
But the Yellow Submarine's advantage lasted just three minutes as Aalborg, managed by ex-Arsenal chief Bruce Rioch, restored parity through a dinked Thomas Envoldsen finish.
After the break Villarreal again turned on the style as Llorente (67) followed up a Marcos Senna drive and the forward then grabbed his side's fourth shortly after. Andreas Johansson pulled a goal back for Aalborg with 13 minutes remaining, but French veteran Robert Pires showed all of his experience two minutes later to restore Villarreal's three-goal advantage and Llorente wrapped up his hat-trick in the dying stages.
Porto were defeated 1-0 by Dynamo Kiev in Tuesday night's only quiet contest to end Jesualdo Ferreira's side's phenomenal record of one defeat in their last 21 games at Estadio do Drago ahead of kick-off. The visitors struck after 27 minutes as Olexandr Aliyev placed a free-kick beyond the reach of Porto goalkeeper Nuno to secure the points in Group G.
Zenit St Petersburg and BATE Borisov both look unlikely to qualify from Group H after playing out a 1-1 draw in the early kick-off. An enthralling opening 45 minutes at Petrovsky Stadium saw the woodwork rattled on three separate occasions as Zenit efforts from Fatih Tekke and Danny sandwiched Igor Stasevich's stab for BATE.
Seven minutes after the interval, the opening goal arrived as - against the run of play - Belarusian outfit BATE stunned their hosts with a textbook counter-attacking punch when half-time substitute Pavel Nekhaychik slotted in from close range. Tekke deservedly rescued a point for Zenit - who remain without a win in this year's competition - with nine minutes remaining as he broke the BATE offside trap to volley an equaliser, but the draw leaves both sides facing a battle to progress.
